Unfortunately, many common sunscreens contain ingredients that can cause irritation to people with sensitive skin types. Irritant sunscreen chemicals include PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) and benzophenones like oxybenzone, dioxybenzone or sulsiobenzone. Some blocking compounds such as titanium oxide and zinc oxide do not get absorbed and do not irritate the skin, but they also leave visible material on the surface and take a long time to apply properly. Sunscreens for sensitive skin types should also not contain ingredients such as alcohol, fragrances or preservatives.
One excellent line of sunscreen products for sensitive skin is KINeSYS, which do not contain alcohol, PABA, or preservatives. The active ingredients in the KINeSYS line include Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Octisalate, and Avobenzone (Parsol 1789) which are non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic...popular with people that have sensitive skin types.
